Contractions Stage 4

Better Writing: Better Business

LESSON

A contraction is a shortened way of writing two words.

We often use contractions with pronouns as well as with verbs (see Stage 3).

The rule is the same as in Stage 3 Contractions: use an apostrophe ( ) to mark where a letter or letters have been left out.

  eg

they have

theyve

who is

whos

I had

Id

Handy Hint

Put the apostrophe in the space where you have taken out the letter.

it is
it's
